E. L. Doctorows 1994 erschienener Roman The Waterworks ist ein Pastiche der Detektivgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Es ist nach dem Thriller Billy Bathgate (1989) der zweite Text, in dem sich der Autor mit Genreformen auseinandersetzt. In diesen Romanen gibt Doctorow dem Begriff des Genres eine postmoderne Wendung und erhebt seine Texte in die Sphäre der Kunst – ohne dabei zu riskieren, dass sie ihren Reiz als Genrestücke verlieren.

Er war ein Literat, der gezeigt hat, wie viel man als Erzähler mit Geschichte machen kann. Die Geschichte war eines seiner Hauptthemen als Erzähler. Und eben nicht einfach nur Geschichte im Allgemeinen, sondern man könnte sagen, der immer wieder verschüttete, vergessene Zug der Ungerechtigkeit, Gewalt und Grausamkeit in der amerikanischen Geschichte.
E. L. Doctorow’s 1994 novel The Waterworks is a pastiche of 19th-century detective fiction. It is the second text, after the thriller Billy Bathgate (1989), in which the author explores genre forms. In these novels, Doctorow gives the concept of genre a postmodern twist, elevating his texts into the realm of art – without risking that they lose their appeal as genre pieces.

He was a man of letters who showed how much you can do with history as a storyteller. History was one of his main themes as a storyteller. And not just history in general, but, one could say, the always buried, forgotten trait of injustice, violence and cruelty in American history.
